I don't know how to categorize some of these under your rubric:
Isaac Asimov's End of Eternity is one of my favorites; kind of PPSP, but there are other elements I won't spoil.
Orson Scott Card's Worthing Saga defies categorization. It blurs the lines between Sci-Fi and Fantasy in a way that made me question whether there is a difference.
the categorization thing is DEFINITELY incomplete :) maybe I'll do a second post someday to add some more categories. I don't know where I'd put End of Eternity, or the rest of the books after Ender's Game, or The Sirens of Titan. For sure! Thanks for the thoughts and recommendations!
You've mentioned Ender's Game so I have to add that the book that has had the most profound and lasting impact on me, the book that I don't really call my favorite because that doesn't really capture it, is Speaker for the Dead, which is definitely sci-fi, but also fits none of these categories.
Speaker for the Dead is fantastic. It's been awhile since I read it, I'd like to try again. But I remember it being really wild and really visual. Also totally NOT what I'd expected after reading Ender's Game. But wonderful.
And yes it totally doesn't fit these categories - my list is definitely incomplete. Maybe we'll invent a couple new categories. Thanks for sharing!
Lovely list! I’ve read 3/4 and have a friend ready to lend me The Three Body Problem next time we meet. I’m always hesitant to pick up Sci-Fi for some reason, but these have all been great reads.
I read Ender’s Game in 7th grade and it always stuck with me and sparked that enjoyment of reading the climax of Speaker For The Dead is one of my favorite experiences reading of all time.

Dune? :)
(It's my first sci-fi, and totally enjoying getting lost in the pages)
